Museum of Veterinary Medicine
Humans and animals: a fascinating partnership that has marked our development as a species and shaped our civilisations. The process of domestication has been transformed into a profound, and reciprocal bond. On such solid foundations as these we have developed the fields of animal medicine (the word “veterinary” derives from the Latin veterinus, a draft or pack animal) and our knowledge of animal species, a science that has, more recently, given rise to the university’s Museum of Veterinary Medicine.
Established in the mid-1990s, the museum houses skeleton and bone specimens, and collections and anatomical exhibits of wild and domestic animals, with both normal and pathological examples.
The Museum of Veterinary Medicine may be the youngest of the university’s museums, but in terms of the size and quality of its collections, it bears comparison with its more venerable counterparts. In particular, it offers a wealth of insights into the world of vertebrate species and their unique qualities: their size and structure, and their adaptation to the environments they colonised .
Now part of the Department of Comparative Biomedicine and Food Science, the museum is a priceless educational resource for the students of the Agripolis campus and, increasingly, an essential port of call for professional scholars, amateur researchers and school parties, indeed for anyone who wishes to expand their understanding of this fascinating subject.
